Trends@ MY Fashion Incubator

Promostyl reports on retail trends: In a world that is forever standardized and regimented (even in products or point of sale), these days brands constantly look for ways to make them stand out against the competition. They can achieve this by transforming customers’ personal experience of a shop, developing unique scenarios in which to sell their products and attract customers. A great example is 2012 winner for the Paris Shop & Design prize of “service to individuals”, dry cleaner’s H20, who promote a sustainably durable method of dry cleaning. Since the shop renovation, the design of the dry cleaner has sparked a 40% increase in clientele for an investment of only 15% more compared to the estimated cost of a typical shop. The shwopping revolution

Marks & Spencer has joined forces with Joanna Lumley to launch shwopping – a new way to shop with M&S that will revolutionise clothes shopping and help us live more sustainable lives. The ‘Shwop Coat’ is made from shwopped wool donated by customers in M&S stores or via charity partner Oxfam. The coat is better value for the environment and, at £89, it is half the cost it would be if made from virgin wool so customers save money too! The coat has been on sale in selected stores across UK and online from 10 October. If you are interested in sustainable products, you might also like to read about the Marks & Spencer’s sustainable suit that was launched earlier in the year. For more info contact us

How to bring consumers back to the stores?
To compete with traditional Supermarkets, innovative groceries stores like Trader Joe’s and Wegmans in the US, offer a massive selection of private label: not “generic” but fun and quirky items that in many cases are better than the name brands. What can your store offer that bigger ones don’t? Find your way to be unique and adjust accordingly.
When French retailer “Nature et Découvertes” got implanted in its home country, its positioning strategy focused on the creation of a specific in-store atmosphere. All the senses were stimulated: hearing – by birdsongs; smell – by the scent of cedar; sight – by colours and natural materials; taste – by the possibility of drinking herbal tea… Such an atmosphere aimed at reinforcing consumers’ pleasure, by arranging for them to feel certain emotions and enjoy a gratifying experience. How do you create a unique shopping experience in your store?

How to bring consumers back to the stores?
Read about the Boomerang Principle from Jurek Leon. The question you, retailers, should be continually asking yourselves is, “Do you think that customer will come back?”. You process the transaction not the customer; you need to connect with each customer. To do this contact Clarisse for the link to the full article.

Also, this month the Retail Concepts team take on rules in Retail Shops. Eg. Instead of instituting a fitting room minimum, add additional hooks and label them “love, maybe and no” to help customers organize their items and make it more likely for them to keep them neatly on hangers. Contact Clarisse for the link to the full article or for more retail tips.

Research helping small businesses to avoid scams by Curtin Business School is examining how often you fall victim to small business scams. Results in 2012 showed that while small businesses are a popular target for scammers, 1 in 8 small businesses surveyed could not actually identify whether or not they’d been scammed.  Project co-researcher & member of the Belmont BEC Management Board, Dr Louis Geneste, highlighted that the proportion of scammed small firms is higher than the general Australian population and also reported that research from the US showed 90% of the cost of online scams involving identity theft was borne by business.  One of the key aims of the research is to develop educational material for small business owners to help avoid exposure to scams. How to compete with e-Retail: Provide me with Memories, don’t sell me Product
An American retailer called American Girl approach their market differently by adopting modern retailing techniques. Dolls, like many products, are now available online, but this company encourages its customers to walk into the store and spend at least $99 US on a doll and keep coming back to spend more. Big Think reports : Meet the Urban Datasexual
The same cultural zeitgeist that gave us the metrosexual – the urban male obsessive about grooming and personal appearance – is also creating its digital equivalent: the datasexual. The datasexual looks a lot like you and me, but they are relentlessly digital, they obsessively record everything about their personal lives, and they think that data is sexy. For eg. Nike already allows joggeurs to measure and share their performances online and the whole datasexual craze is starting to tip into the fashion mainstream. To read the full article contact Clarisse

With the lack of consistent certifications and confusion around labels like “ethical”, “green”, and “eco”, you’d think it’s about time that the industry establish a standard representing transparency. Developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the Higg Index 1.0 – although in its beginning stages – has the potential to create a measurable index that will allow fashion companies to address their social and environmental impacts based upon the footprint of their brand, product, and facilities.
