This is the 18th year that the business awards have run, and they provide a fantastic opportunity for small and growing enterprises in Western Australia to be recognised for their achievements.

All the categories are listed in the Belmont Small Business Awards 2011 flyer.

Kewdale based Heather Pritchard has always loved the water, and despite being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, this has never changed. She turned her passion into a business, when she created a device to help her snorkel. Her first prototype was made out of poly pipe and a real estate sign. Called the ‘WatrWing’, Heathers device is now sold to swimming schools around the country and overseas, and the Australian Olympic Swim Team train with it. Heather donates $1 from every ‘WatrWing’ sold to the MS Society.

Karl Farrell was an inspirational Chairman of TCFWA and this special award honours his memory. The Designedge Fashion Incubator is the only virtual Fashion Incubator in Australia and has provided both retail and virtual showroom programs and assisted hundreds of designers through the co-ordination of trade exhibition space. Kerry has not had an easy life, but with conviction and passion has developed a powerful and productive social justice and advocacy role for herself, via her own business called Another Angle Consulting and Training.

Cosmic Cocktails have completely revamped their website to include ordering online for both hire products and those for sale, and in addition now proactively market their business on Facebook. The feedback received about the new website has been fantastic and customers love being able to order online.

Friends of Belmont BEC, was launched in July 2009 to assist with the ongoing provision of small business services delivered by the Belmont Business Enterprise Centre. Belmont BEC has always been a great advocate of volunteering and has over the past 17 years had in excess of 1,450 volunteers assist with its many projects and client support programs. Volunteers play a vital part in the operations of all non profit community organisations and contribute greatly to the richness of the fabric of society by sharing their skills and talents to assist others.

At age 16 Carina demonstrated amazing courage by escaping war-torn Vietnam on a small wooden boat with her 2 younger siblings and 370 other people. Carina survived harrowing conditions in a refugee camp in Indonesia, before being given the opportunity to go to the USA where she earned a Bachelor of Chemistry and MBA. Five years ago, Carina settled with her husband and daughter in Perth, and made a pledge to raise awareness of ‘boat people’ and their stories. This year she released her first book ‘Boat People: Personal Stories from the Vietnamese Exodus 1975 – 1996′. Carina now volunteers her time to assist families from different parts of the world to search for graves of their loved ones in former refugee camps in Indonesia.

Kewdale based Eco Pallets was established in early 2009 and sell new and used 100% recyclable plastic pallets of various sizes and applications as an alternative to wooden pallets. They also supply bundled pallets for the safe storage and transport of chemicals drums and collapsible plastic containers for use in storage, transport and display. The company offer a buy back scheme on their new pallets. Once the pallets have been used, Eco Pallets will buy them back for a reduced price, and then sell them as second hand pallets.

At 50 years of age, Maria quit her job and started her first Spanish food produce outlet at the Wembley Food Hall. The business has now moved to Mt Hawthorn and is called Spanish Flavours. Maria’s dream is to continue to service the people of Perth authentic food from Spain and Latin America, and to give her countrymen a taste of home.
